How is it used in cosmetic medicine?
The bio-protein Botox is used in the injectable form to reduce appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and thereby making the patient look younger. Botox is FDA approved as a cosmetic treatment and causes no or very little side effects.
The Botox injections are injected areas such as forehead and cows feet. A cold pack is first applied to the desired area and then the toxin is injected. The pinprick sensation of the injection is lessened by cooling techniques adopted by the treatment centers. All the areas can be covered in a single visit to a treatment visit. But the muscles usually overcome the acute effects of Botox and hence the need for multiple visits. Several treatment over a year’s time helps make a lasting and defined anatomic effect, thereby resulting in smooth and unwrinkled skin. However, the number of visits and time required to bring the desired cosmetic effect varies from person to person.
How does Botox work?
Botox reduces upper facial muscle contractions and relaxes the tense muscles. Upper facial muscle contractions are mostly responsible for fine lines and lines of expressions and by reducing such contractions Botox temporarily eliminates the appearance of winkles and fine lines. In this sense Botox is not technically a dermal filler as opposed to Collagen.
What is Collagen?
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein found in the flesh and connective tissues of mammals. The collagen used in the cosmetic industry is usually derived from bovine tissues.
How is collagen used in the cosmetic industry?
Collagen is used extensively to remove facials lines as well as scars. It is also used define lip contours and for lip augmentation.
At first the medical history of the patient is reviewed and if deemed suitable a bovine collagen injection is injected under the skin of the forearm. The area is observed over several weeks and if it is accepted by the body facial treatment with the bovine collagen is continued. However, if there are reactions, human collagen is used instead of bovine collagen. Collagen is usually injected in crow’s feet, forehead creases and frown. It can also be injected in cheeks to overcome facial fat loos, or in lips for lip defining and lip augmentation. Collagen can also remove acne scars and dark under eye circles. The desired effect is achieved in a single visit but the effect breaks down over months and then one has to go for subsequent treatments.
Botox vs. Collagen
Collagen is a dermal filler whereas Botox is an injectable toxin. There are very minor side effects from Botox and are usually temporary bruising. But collagen is often rejected by the body and can cause redness of skin. Also, Botox is relatively cheaper as human collagen is highly expensive.
